Tasting Notes:  True to its pedigree, our 2019 Durell Vineyard Hayfield Block Pinot Noir displays both the depth of flavor and elegant structure this celebrated vineyard is known for. The wine dark berry and plum core gains richness on the mid palate, broadening to take on notes of brown spice and sweet vannilin oak, all framed by fine grained tannins that add grip and complexity throughout the lengthy finish.

Vineyard: The famed Durell Vineyard lies in the southernmost part of Sonoma Valley, within the Sonoma Coast appellation. At just 10 miles from the San Pablo Bay, on the edge of the Petaluma Gap, the site benefits from cooling fog and afternoon breezes that persist throughout the growing season. The soil is part of an old creek bed, and so is very rocky. Hayfield is one of Durell's smallest and most coveted blocks; known for its compact clusters and late afternoon shade, which deliver both concentration and elegance

Winemaking:  We pick our Durell Vineyard Pinot Noir under the lights in the very early morning. The grapes are immediately transported to the winery where they are de-stemmed into small open-top tanks for cold soak at 45F. After three days, the must is allowed to warm and begin fermentation. At this point, we add a select strain of red Burgundian yeast and begin thrice daily punch downs. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is pressed to new French oak barrels for 18 months, where it completes malolactic fermentation and settles. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
